US President Donald Trump has expressed his “disappointment” to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, over what Mr Trump described as the growing trade imbalance between the two countries.
Mr Trump — who made the US’s trade deficit with China a key talking point during his presidential campaign — told Mr Xi “that the situation is not sustainable”, according to a White House readout of yesterday’s call released on Tuesday.
The US had a $347bn trade deficit in goods with China in 2016, and Mr Trump has previously laid blame for the figure with his predecessors.
