The global shift away from coal gained momentum on Thursday as more than 25 countries and regions pledged to stop using the fuel in power generation by 2030.
The British-Canadian initiative was supported by countries including France, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Finland, Portugal and New Zealand, as well as the US state of Washington and Canadian provinces such as Ontario and Alberta.
All pledged to phase out coal-fired power plants, though several countries have already said they will reach the 2030 target earlier. The UK, for example, is committed to ending the use of coal power by 2025.
