Donald Trump has lashed out after North Korea’s latest nuclear weapons test, warning Pyongyang that its actions were “hostile and dangerous” to the US and criticising the responses from South Korea and China.
The US president and his national security team were due to meet on Sunday to discuss the test of what North Korea claimed was a hydrogen bomb capable of being mounted on a ballistic missile. The test, estimated to have been about 10 times more powerful than anything North Korea has detonated previously, triggered a magnitude 6.3 earthquake and was described by Pyongyang as a “perfect success”.
“North Korea is a rogue nation which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success,” Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday.
