Kenyans risk 4 years in jail for selling or using plastic bags

Kenya imposed the world’s toughest laws to reduce plastic pollution on Monday, with people selling or using plastic bags at risk of up to four years in prison and fines of up to 4m Kenyan shillings ($38,000).

The ban applies to the use, manufacture and importation of plastic bags in east Africa’s dominant economy. Judy Wakhungu, the environment minister, said the initial target would be manufacturers and suppliers.

“The public will have a grace period,” she said. “We know it is going to take time for people to change their habits.”
