Catalan police shot dead the man suspected of killing 13 people in a Barcelona street last week, bringing to a dramatic end a five-day manhunt for those behind Spain’s worst terrorist attack in more than a decade.
Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, who was identified by police as the driver of the van that crashed into crowds in Barcelona on Thursday, was on Monday killed near the town of Subirats, 50km to the west. He was wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest, police said. A bomb disposal unit was brought in to determine whether the device was real.
Abouyaaqoub was the last of the 12-man cell to remain at large, as the others have either been killed or captured in recent days.
