Puerto Ricans in overwhelming vote for island to be 51st US state

Puerto Ricans on Sunday voted overwhelmingly to support becoming the 51st US state in a non-binding referendum that was boycotted by opponents of the long-shot bid.

With 76 per cent of precincts reporting, more than 97 per cent of those voting had endorsed statehood, according to a tally posted on the Puerto Rico election commission website.

This was the fifth time that island residents have been asked to vote on their future. In 2012, the most recent balloting, 61 per cent endorsed statehood. But the US Congress, which began considering Puerto Rico’s status more than a century ago, took no action.
