While the investigation continues, there is no indication that a vehicle collision in New York City’s Times Square on Thursday that killed one person and injured more than 20 was an act of terrorism, city officials said in their latest update.
During a press conference after the collision — which took place around lunch time in the bustling area packed with tourist attractions and office buildings — the city’s mayor, Bill DeBlasio, and other emergency officials said that the driver of the 2009 Honda Accord was in custody.
Officials identified the driver as Richard Rojas, 26, who is from New York City’s Bronx borough and had several prior arrests, including for drunk driving.
