While Argentine striker Carlos Tevez was being mobbed by hundreds of fans as he arrived in Shanghai on Thursday, 11-year-old Xiang Rong was kicking a ball around a muddy pitch at a youth training camp on the other side of the city.
In signing for Shanghai Shenhua, Tevez has reportedly become the highest-paid football player in the world, earning an estimated $750,000 a week, double what the world’s top player Cristiano Ronaldo makes. This is despite the 32-year-old Tevez’s best days being behind him.
The unprecedented spending splurge by Chinese clubs on foreign stars such as Tevez over the past two seasons has attracted headlines all over the world.
