Donald Trump has selected Iowa governor Terry Branstad to be his ambassador to China, placing an experienced politician with little diplomatic background at the centre of the US-China relationship.
Assuming he is confirmed by the Senate, Mr Branstad will be the frontman in Beijing for an administration that has promised to be much tougher on China and which has already ruffled feathers by organising a phone call between Mr Trump and Taiwan’s president.
Although he has no direct experience in diplomacy, Mr Branstad will have the advantage of having personal relationships with both Mr Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping.
