Tokyo Olympic stadium choice sparks dispute

Tokyo attempted to put its scandal-hit preparations for the 2020 Olympics back on track yesterday when it finally settled on a Japanese design for the new national stadium.

But the choice of a multi-tiered, part-wooden stadium nicknamed “the hamburger” on social media could ignite further trouble after architects said it bore “remarkable similarities” to a blueprint abandoned in July.

The selection of the “trees and green” themed stadium designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma sought to end months of uncertainty. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a specially convened cabinet meeting that the chosen design was a “wonderful plan that meets criteria such as basic principles, construction period and cost”.
