Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have captured a Jordanian pilot in Syria, after claiming to have shot down his warplane, in the first loss of an aircraft operating as part of the US-led coalition against Islamist extremists in the country.
An official from Jordan’s armed forces confirmed that a warplane had been lost on Wednesday morning and that one of its pilots had been captured, according to Jordan’s state news agency.
“Jordan holds the organisation [Isis] and those who support it responsible for the safety of the pilot and for preserving his life,” the Petra news agency quoted the official as saying.
