A Chinese court sentenced a prominent Uighur academic to life in prison on Tuesday, according to one of his lawyers, in the harshest verdict handed down since President Xi Jinping launched a crackdown on internal dissent.
Ilham Tohti, a professor at Minzu University in Beijing, was tried earlier this month for allegedly advocating independence for Xinjiang in northwestern China, home to an increasingly violent separatist movement by members of the region’s largely Muslim Uighur community.
