The release of Peter Theo Curtis, who was held by a group called Jabhat al-Nusra, follows the murder of James Foley, another kidnapped US reporter, by militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as Isis, last week.
John Kerry, the US secretary of state, said in a statement: “Particularly after a week marked by unspeakable tragedy, we are all relieved and grateful knowing that Theo Curtis is coming home.”
