Thai coup wins royal support

Thailand’s new military ruler yesterday declared his coup royally approved and warned his junta would use force to crush peaceful anti-putsch protests.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha defended his takeover and said he would hold elections as soon as possible, but gave no timeframe for a transition from his sweeping crackdown on dissent.

Speaking after a proclamation from King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s court that backed Thursday’s seizure of power, Gen Prayuth delivered his toughest message yet to the pockets of public resistance against the 12th coup in Thailand in 82 years.
