Thais defy junta’s ban on protests

Thai anti-coup protesters faced down hundreds of soldiers yesterday as the new military junta faced fresh fresh condemnation for its escalating campaign to crush dissent.

Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha vowed to revive the country’s sputtering economy and pay back billions of dollars owed to rice farmers, as he sought to combat criticism that the military’s putsch had sent human rights into freefall.

The generals warned that anyone disobeying their ban on demonstrations would face a military court, underscoring their sudden switch to repression after months of rhetoric about keeping out of the country’s long-running political crisis.
