An explosion and fire in a coal mine in western Turkey claimed the lives of at least 201 miners, injured a further 80 and trapped more than 200 below ground, according to officials.

There were 787 people inside the mine at the time of the blast and 363 have been evacuated, Mr Yildiz had said earlier. He later declined to give specific figures, noting that the initial information had been provided by the company that operated the mine.
