Chinese police have released eight people who were detained after taking part in a demonstration in Guangzhou on Tuesday against a planned chemical plant in another city in Guangdong province.
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, on Tuesday to support residents of Maoming city where authorities intend to build a plant to manufacture the toxic chemical paraxylene (PX).
One of the organisers of the Guangzhou protest who gave his surname as Dai told the Financial Times that police detained nine demonstrators on Tuesday, although one was later released one on medical grounds. He added that lawyers and family members were not being allowed to see the detained protesters.
