Xinjiang commander removed after Beijing attack

China has removed the military commander from his Communist party position in restive Xinjiang, on its central Asian frontier, six days after a family from the region crashed their car in the symbolic heart of Beijing killing themselves and two tourists.

Had the flaming vehicle continued a few metres further, it would have come to rest under the iconic portrait of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China, which overlooks Tiananmen Square in central Beijing.

Last week, Beijing police said it was a “terrorist attack” carried out by the separatist East Turkestan Islamic Movement, or ETIM.
