Barack Obama will be paid a rare White House visit today by the president of Vietnam, Truong Tan Sang, in a sign of warmer ties between the former wartime foes.
The presidents of the two countries, which resumed diplomatic relations in 1995, will discuss regional trade and security issues.
At a time when the US administration is buffeted by demands in the Middle East, including Syria’s civil war, the coup in Egypt and the Israel-Palestine peace talks, Mr Sang’s visit is a chance to focus on what Mr Obama had signalled as one of his second term priorities, the pivot to Asia.
