Telefónica is close to sealing the acquisition of KPN’s German business to create the largest mobile operator in the country after almost a decade of discussions between the two sides.
Spain’s Telefónica is in advanced talks to buy E-Plus for about $6bn from the Dutch group, in which Carlos Slim’s América Móvil is the largest shareholder.
KPN would also get a small stake in the enlarged Telefónica Deutschland, two people close to the situation said, while Telefónica would end up with a stake of more than 50 per cent in a combined entity that has an enterprise value of about €16bn.
