The biggest rivals to Sotheby’s and Christie’s in 2011 were Chinese auction houses, according to data from the Conseil des Ventes, the French auction market regulation body. This year’s report, due for release on June 26, is expected to also underline the challenge posed by the Chinese companies, despite a 50 per cent decline in value sold in the Chinese market during the first three months of 2013.
