Maduro wins tight Venezuela election

Nicolás Maduro, who took over Venezuela’s presidency after Hugo Chávez died six weeks ago, will continue his mentor’s legacy for six more years after winning Sunday’s presidential election by an unexpectedly narrow margin.

The 50-year-old former trade unionist won 50.66 per cent of the vote, leaving the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles with 49.07 per cent, after more than 99 per cent of the vote had been counted.

“Mission accomplished, Commander Chávez!” roared Mr Maduro before a crowd of elated supporters gathered outside the Miraflores presidential palace shortly after the results were announced at 11.15pm on Sunday night.
