Nicolás Maduro, who took over Venezuela’s presidency after Hugo Chávez died six weeks ago, will continue his mentor’s legacy for six more years after winning Sunday’s presidential election by an unexpectedly narrow margin.
The 50-year-old former trade unionist won 50.66 per cent of the vote, leaving the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles with 49.07 per cent, after more than 99 per cent of the vote had been counted.
