Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico’s new president, is pushing for constitutional reform as he attempts to open up the country’s state-run energy sector to private investment.
In his first interview with an international newspaper since taking office this month, Mr Peña Nieto told the Financial Times that he would not privatise Pemex, the state oil company. But he said that he was determined to use private investment in Mexico’s highly protected energy sector to boost wider development.
“If we wait until Pemex alone has a greater capacity [to extract oil and gas], I think we would be postponing what today represents a great opportunity for growth and greater development,” he said.
