The New York Times is preparing to unveil a Chinese-language version of its website, an attempt to bolster its digital operations by creating a presence in the fast-growing but difficult-to-navigate China media market.
The Chinese edition, at cn.nytimes.com, is expected to launch in the coming days, according to people who work at the company.
On Wednesday morning, the site required visitors to submit a username and password. The New York Times also recently started an account on the Chinese social media site Weibo and will use it to promote the site, these people said.
