The bitter intellectual property dispute between American technology company AMSC and Sinovel, one of China’s biggest wind turbine makers, has escalated to China’s Supreme Court, heightening commercial tensions between the world’s largest and second-largest economies.
AMSC, a former star of the US clean energy sector, is seeking $1.2bn from Sinovel in three lawsuits and an arbitration dispute in Beijing.
The Chinese company was once AMSC’s biggest customer, accounting for 70 per cent of revenues in late 2010. The US company alleges that Sinovel made unauthorised use of proprietary turbine software code and breached supply contracts.
