Asia scrambles to tap into cheaper gas

Shale gas may have revolutionised the US energy market, but Chevron is counting on it not having the same effect in Asia, at least for a while yet.

The company is investing a planned $39bn in Gorgon and Wheatstone, two huge gas projects off the coast of Western Australia to produce liquefied natural gas for Asian markets.

Bringing these feats of engineering into service on time and on budget will be a challenge. But Chevron expects that the projects will be lucrative, enabling it to sell gas in Asian markets at high prices for decades.
