Kevin Rudd resigned as Australia’s foreign minister yesterday during a visit to the US, triggering speculation that he will challenge Julia Gillard, prime minister, for the leadership of the Labor party.
In a dramatic announcement after midnight in Washington, Mr Rudd, whom Ms Gillard ousted as prime minister in a coup in 2010, blamed attacks by “faceless men” for his decision.
“It’s time for some plain-speaking on this . . . I can only serve as foreign minister if I have the confidence of prime minister Gillard and her senior ministers,” Mr Rudd said.
