Chinese vice-president faces balancing act

Compared with the poverty and strict authoritarianism of post-cultural revolution China, Muscatine in Iowa must have seemed obscenely affluent.

This is where Xi Jinping, Chinese vice-president, made his first trip abroad in April 1985. Then the Communist party secretary of Zhengding county, he led a five-person delegation to research pig-farming techniques in the US.

Whatever his first impression, Mr Xi played it cool during a subsequent visit to Washington in 1987, telling a close Chinese expatriate friend at the time that he was not very impressed by the US.
