Stop demonising the wealth creators

There seems to be widespread acceptance that we need more entrepreneurs to create jobs and help restore living standards. Yet our understanding of how we encourage citizens to start their own businesses is rudimentary.

What might make a difference? Some suggest it is the availability of capital. Others believe tax policy is the key. Many commentators think deregulation is the answer. A few point to technology transfer from universities. Still others argue that immigration is a crucial contributor.

My view is that all these factors have an influence. But from discussions over many years with hundreds of actual and aspiring entrepreneurs I think culture is possibly the most powerful issue.

盧克•強森(Luke Johnson)是一位成果頗豐的企業家和創業家,他爲英國《金融時報》撰寫企業家專欄。他目前擔任英國皇家藝術協會的主席,並管理著一傢俬人股本投資公司——Risk Capital Partners。強森曾在牛津大學學醫,但是畢業後卻進入投行業。他在1992年收購PizzaExpress,擔任其董事長,並將其上市。到1999年出售的時候,PizzaExpress的股價已經從40英鎊漲至800英鎊。
