China has hit back at the US over Washington’s sanctions against a Chinese oil trading company doing business in Iran, highlighting the difficulties the US faces in its attempt to build a coalition to put pressure on Tehran over its nuclear programme.
China’s foreign ministry called Washington’s move to slap penalties on Zhuhai Zhenrong, a state-owned company, “unreasonable” and said it was not in line with the spirit and content of UN Security Council resolutions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.
“We express strong dissatisfaction and determined opposition,” said Liu Weimin, a foreign ministry spokesman, at the weekend.
