Governments of some of the world’s largest economies agreed on Thursday to open yet further their public procurement markets to each other’s companies, an agreement that could provide a model for future trade deals.
Ministers meeting at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva announced that they had updated the government procurement agreement (GPA), a pact between 42 member countries, overcoming last-minute tussles between the EU and Japan.
But a fresh bid from China to join the pact met a cool welcome from the US, which said it did not cover enough of China’s huge and complex array of state agencies and regional and local governments.
