Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen president, has agreed to end his 33-year rule, in a breakthrough that international powers hope will halt the bloody crisis in the Arab world’s poorest country.
Ban Ki-Moon, UN secretary-general, said Mr Saleh would travel to the US for medical treatment immediately after handing over power, making him the fourth Arab leader to be forced from office by this year’s popular uprisings.
Pitched battles and street demonstrations have taken the country to the brink of civil war during one of the Arab spring’s longest and harshest uprisings.
