Hundreds of rebels stormed Muammer Gaddafi’s compound, amid chaotic scenes in Tripoli, as international preparations for a new order in Libya intensified.
Rebel forces on Tuesday entered Col Gaddafi’s house in his Bab al-Aziziya headquarters, a 6km square compound where western officials say that the Libyan leader has probably been in hiding.
Reports from the ground said that the compound’s gates were blown open as rebels swarmed in, firing guns into the air in jubilation and ripping up photos of Col Gaddafi. But the Bab al-Aziziya complex is thought to have extensive tunnels that could facilitate the Libyan leader’s escape.
