The youngest sister of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Thai prime minister, will lead the country’s main opposition party in the general election on July 3.
The appointment of Yingluck Shinawatra, who is politically untested, suggests that Mr Thaksin intends to retain control of the opposition Puea Thai party ahead of the poll.
“This is a reconfirmation of Thaksin’s determination to make the election about him,” said Michael Montesano at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.
