Merkel’s style deficit may have become a political asset: the dull outfits for which she became famous during 15 years as a parliamentarian (and also adorn “her” Barbie) demonstrated consistency and prudence, two qualities prized in German politics; and, perhaps more importantly, her image was perceived as an honest reflection of her personality – a no-nonsense, rational woman partial to consensus politics who seemed completely unfazed by being chastised for her fashion sense.
