The appointment of Gary Locke as ambassador in Beijing has given the Obama administration a chance to court business with a high-profile choice for the position of commerce secretary.
The administration says it has yet to find a replacement for Mr Locke in the commerce secretary post, which he has held since 2009 and will leave to take up the Beijing position.
His appointment has yet to be formally announced but administration officials said it could come as early as Tuesday.
