Sina banks on microblogs in China

Sina, which runs China’s largest online news portal, has unveiled aggressive expansion plans for its microblog, highlighting the importance that social networking tools are gaining in China’s internet industry.

The microblogs operated by Sina as well as those of Tencent and Sohu, two other large online portals, have been thriving because Twitter is blocked in China.

But Beijing has stepped up censorship of the internet over the past two weeks amid fears that the pro-democracy uprisings sweeping the Middle East could be carried to China via the internet.
