Pressure is mounting on the Canadian government to block BHP Billiton’s $39bn hostile bid for PotashCorp as three other provinces joined Saskatchewan to protest against any deal.
According to a person with connections to the Conservative party, a private poll in Saskatchewan concluded that most of the party’s 13 members of parliament from the province risked losing their seats if the deal went ahead.
The Conservatives lead a minority government with 144 MPs out of a total of 308.
