Chinese mine accident prompts rescue calls

Hopes were fading for 11 Chinese coal miners trapped underground following a gas explosion that killed 26 and confirmed the country’s position as the most dangerous place in the world to mine.

Relatives and friends gathered at a mine in the central Henan province, following the weekend explosion, in an echo of their counterparts in Chile last week.

While there was little discussion of the incident in China’s heavily censored official media, bloggers and online commentators were quick to make bitter comparisons between Henan and the triumphant rescue in Chile.
