Iran sought to derail the US drive for new economic sanctions yesterday by agreeing to export most of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for nuclear fuel.
Brazil, which defied the US by helping to broker the deal together with Ankara, hailed the “joint declaration” as a victory for diplomacy that “eliminates” the need for more sanctions.
But the White House countered that the “vague” announcement provided no guarantee that Iran would stop enriching uranium, a process that breaks five United Nations resolutions and could be used to make nuclear weapons.
