SAMSUNG POISED TO TAKE NUMBER ONE SALES SPOT FROM US RIVAL HP

Samsung Electronics is on track to overtake Hewlett-Packard as the world's biggest technology company by sales, a sign of how strongly some South Korean companies have bounced back from the economic downturn.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expect HP's sales of $114bn last year to pip Samsung's projected $113bn. But the South Korean company should surpass its US rival this year – its 2010 sales are forecast at $127bn, compared with $120bn from HP.

The company, which releases its 2009 results today, was once dismissed as a copy-cat manufacturer and poor cousin to its Japanese rivals.
