Japanese finance minister in hospital

Japan's finance minister, Hirohisa Fujii, has been admitted to hospital suffering from high blood pressure and fatigue, following weeks of tense government negotiations that produced a record budget for 2010.

The hospitalisation comes at a delicate time for Yukio Hatoyama, the prime minister, who has seen his poll ratings dwindle amid continuing economic weakness and a political funding scandal.

Mr Fujii, 77, is a close ally of Mr Hatoyama and one of the few members of the cabinet with government experience and familiarity with the country's bureaucracy.
