Stern Hu, a China-based executive for Rio Tinto, faces an additional two months in jail after Beijing extended its investigation into the Australian and three other employees of the mining group.
The four have been imprisoned since early July on allegations that they stole state secrets, but the charges were downgraded three months ago when they were formally arrested on suspicion of obtaining trade secrets and commercial bribery.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade yesterday said that it had been told during a consular visit to Mr Hu this week that the Chinese authorities had extended their investigation by two months. The Chinese had previously extended their investigation by one month.
