Ore demand pushes freight costs higher

The freight cost for dry bulk commodities hit a three-month high yesterday amid strong demand for iron ore, coal, fertilisers and grains, traders said.

The increase – a 50 per cent rise since late September – appeared to suggest that strong economic growth lies ahead.

The Baltic Dry Index rose 2 per cent to 3,247 points, the highest level since early August, but was still below June's peak of almost 4,300. The Baltic is also well below last year's record high of more than 11,000.
