Eric Schmidt, Google chief executive, has resigned from Apple's board of directors as the rivalry between the two Silicon Valley companies intensifies.
The departure was a “mutual decision”, according to Apple, and follows an investigation by US regulators into whether Mr Schmidt's position violated antitrust laws.
Mr Schmidt has served on Apple's board since August 2006 but speculation has mounted in recent months that his position was untenable as Google encroached into Apple's market with its mobile phone and desktop PC software.
