China arrests steel executive

Beijing yesterday detained an executive of a large Chinese steel mill in a widening probe that has already led to espionage allegations against four employees of Rio Tinto, the Anglo-Australian miner.

The government also defended its decision to detain the four Rio employees, one of whom is an Australian national.

“Chinese authorities have in fact obtained evidence which proves they stole – for a foreign country – Chinese state secrets, which hurt China's economic interests and economic security,” said Qin Gang, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing.
