Many equity markets enjoyed further strong gains on Tuesday, fuelled by the resurgent financial sector.
European and Asian markets were predominantly higher, but US equities struggled for much of the session. Risk appetite was not spread across all asset classes and a more cautious mood emerged after investors were dealt a reminder that recent gains have been built more on sentiment than solid foundations.
Retail sales data from the US showed that, contrary to expectations of a slight gain, March brought a resumption of the downward trend, with sales slowing 1.1 per cent in the month after a revised 0.3 per cent rise in February.
