With just two weeks to go before the summit of the Group of Twenty countries in London, Tim Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, remains the only confirmed official in what is arguably the most important department in Washington nowadays.
British officials believe it is having a bad impact on the summit.
“There is nobody there [to talk to]. You cannot believe how difficult it is,” Sir Gus O'Donnell, Britain's most senior civil servant, said last week.
