US PROTESTS TO BEIJING OVER NAVAL INCIDENTS

According to the Pentagon, five Chinese ships “shadowed and aggressively manoeuvred in dangerously close proximity” to the USNS Impeccable, an ocean surveillance vessel operating 75 miles south of the Chinese island of Hainan in international waters.

“We're going to continue to operate in those international waters and we expect the Chinese to observe international law around there,” said Robert Gibbs, White House press secretary.

The US embassy in Beijing made a formal protest to the Chinese government over the weekend, and the Pentagon yesterday summoned General Zhao Ning, the Chinese defence attaché, to lodge a complaint.
