Taiwan protesters march on presidential palace

More than half a million people took to the streets of Taiwan's capital at the weekend in the biggest display of disapproval over President Ma Ying-jeou's policies since his election earlier this year.

The protest was organised by the opposition Democratic Progressive party but was also attended by others unhappy over the flagging economy.

The crowd of about 600,000 people converged on the presidential palace in Taipei along five routes in a largely peaceful rally that lasted most of Saturday. When night fell, pro- testers used laser beams to paint giant Chinese characters for “incompetent” on the side of the presidential palace.
